The Terengganu Monsoon Century is perfectly timed for early March, just as the northeast monsoon retreats and leaves the east coast sparkling clean and refreshingly uncrowded. The receding monsoon brings cooler temperatures, lush greenery, and dramatic cloud formations that make for spectacular cycling conditions. The route along Terengganu’s coast is one of Malaysia’s most scenic, with the turquoise South China Sea as a constant companion.
The 160km route runs from Kuala Terengganu southward to Dungun and back, passing through traditional fishing villages where colourful boats line the shore, mangrove forests teeming with birdlife, and long stretches of deserted beach. The coastal road is flat and fast, with occasional rollers as the road weaves around headlands. The 100km option turns back at Kerteh, while the 60km route stays close to Kuala Terengganu, including the scenic Crystal Mosque circuit.
March on the east coast offers ideal cycling conditions: temperatures in the high 20s, lower humidity than mid-year, and the dramatic post-monsoon skies. The roads are quiet as tourist season has not yet started, giving riders virtually traffic-free conditions. Post-ride, explore Kuala Terengganu’s vibrant central market (Pasar Payang), try the famous nasi dagang and keropok lekor, and visit the stunning Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque (Crystal Mosque).
