The Terengganu International Triathlon is one of Malaysia’s most scenic triathlon events, held along the pristine east coast beaches of Kuala Terengganu. The crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea provide a spectacular swim venue, while the bike course along the coastal highway offers flat, fast riding with ocean views and the charm of traditional Malay fishing villages.
The Olympic-distance bike course covers 40km out-and-back along the coastal road towards Marang, passing colourful fishing boats, coconut groves, and traditional kampung houses. The Sprint distance follows a shorter 20km version of the same route. Both courses are pan-flat, making this an ideal event for triathletes looking to set personal bests on the bike leg. The smooth, wide road surface and minimal traffic (full road closures on the race route) contribute to fast conditions.
April is an excellent time to visit Terengganu, sitting between the monsoon season and the peak heat of mid-year. Water temperatures are typically 28-30 degrees Celsius, meaning wetsuits are not required. The host city of Kuala Terengganu offers authentic east coast Malay culture, incredible seafood, and landmarks like the Crystal Mosque and the floating market at Pasar Payang. Budget accommodation and homestays are plentiful, and the event is well-connected via direct flights from KL.
