The Taman Negara Gravel Expedition is a three-day immersive cycling adventure along the periphery of Malaysia’s most famous national park. Taman Negara protects 4,343 square kilometres of primary tropical rainforest estimated to be 130 million years old, and this gravel expedition takes riders through the buffer zone communities and landscapes that border this ancient wilderness. It is one of Malaysia’s most unique cycling experiences.
Day 1 starts at Kuala Tahan village and follows the Tembeling River upstream on a mix of laterite roads and jungle tracks, passing indigenous Batek Orang Asli settlements and dense riparian forest. Day 2 is the longest stage, crossing through rubber and palm oil estates with views of Taman Negara’s unbroken forest canopy on the horizon, finishing at a riverside camp near Kuala Lipis. Day 3 returns to Kuala Tahan via a scenic route through the hills, with a celebratory river boat ride for the final stretch.
The all-inclusive fee covers guided riding with experienced local guides, two nights of accommodation (jungle lodge and riverside camp), all meals featuring Pahang specialities, luggage transfer, boat transfers, and park entry permits. Riders need a gravel or mountain bike with 40mm+ tyres and should be comfortable with 60km off-road days. Wildlife sightings are common and may include monkeys, hornbills, monitor lizards, and if particularly lucky, elephant tracks along the riverside trails.
