The Taiping Heritage Cycling Festival celebrates one of Malaysia’s most charming towns, a place where colonial-era buildings sit beneath canopies of ancient rain trees and the stunning Lake Gardens offer a green oasis at the foot of the Larut Range. Taiping’s cycling-friendly flat town centre and scenic surrounding roads make it an ideal venue for a sportive that combines sport with heritage tourism.
The 100km route heads north to Kuala Sepetang (formerly Port Weld), where riders pass through one of the most extensive mangrove forests in Peninsular Malaysia, before looping inland through traditional Malay villages and rubber smallholdings. The 60km option follows a similar coastal route but returns earlier, while the 25km ride loops through the Lake Gardens, Taiping Zoo, and the charming colonial-era town centre, perfect for families and casual riders.
Taiping claims the title of Malaysia’s oldest town established by the British, and its heritage is beautifully preserved. The Lake Gardens, created from abandoned tin mines, are among the most beautiful public parks in the country. Post-ride, explore the Taiping War Cemetery, the colonial-era Railway Station Hotel, and the bustling night market. Taiping is famous for its rain (it is the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia), but December is typically one of the drier months, and the lush greenery that the rainfall produces is part of the town’s charm.
