The Sibu Rejang Century follows the banks of the Rajang River, Malaysia’s longest river at 563km, through the agricultural heartland of central Sarawak. Sibu, known as the Swan City, is the gateway to the Rajang basin and a melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Iban, and Melanau cultures. This century ride immerses cyclists in the region’s unique riverine landscape and multicultural communities.
The 100km route follows both banks of the Rajang, crossing via the Durin Bridge and Lanang Bridge, and venturing into the surrounding peatland forests and pepper gardens. The terrain is almost entirely flat, as the Rajang floodplain is one of the flattest landscapes in Borneo. Highlights include passing through an Iban longhouse community where traditional hospitality is legendary, views of massive timber-laden barges on the river, and the colourful Chinese temples of Sibu’s old town.
Sibu is accessible via daily flights from Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuala Lumpur. The city’s food scene rivals Kuching’s, with kampua mee (a dry noodle dish unique to Sibu), kompia (bagel-like buns), and fresh river fish being local specialities. The post-ride celebration at the Sibu Civic Centre features a cultural performance and food market showcasing the diverse cuisines of the Rajang basin.
