The Selangor Gravel Grinder is at the forefront of Malaysia’s rapidly growing gravel cycling scene. Based in the charming foothill town of Kuala Kubu Bharu, just 90 minutes north of KL, this event takes riders onto the unpaved roads and trails that crisscross the rubber and oil palm estates flanking the Titiwangsa mountain range. It is a true adventure ride through terrain that most road cyclists never experience.

The 100km route is a demanding mix of laterite plantation roads, compacted jungle tracks, river crossings, and short sections of tarmac connecting the off-road segments. Highlights include a stunning traverse through an abandoned rubber estate, a climb through primary rainforest to a ridge viewpoint, and a fast descent on smooth laterite to the banks of the Selangor River. The 50km route covers the most scenic sections of the longer route, skipping the tougher climbs.

A gravel or adventure bike with 40mm+ tyres is recommended, though riders have completed the event on hardtail mountain bikes. Tubeless tyres are strongly advised due to thorns and sharp laterite stones. Each rider should carry at least 2 litres of water, basic tools, and a tube or tyre plug kit. Feed stations are set up at 25km intervals with water, fruit, and energy snacks. The post-ride gathering at Kuala Kubu Bharu’s famous Chinese coffee shops is a highlight, with riders swapping stories over white coffee and toast.
