The Sarawak Rainforest Gravel is Borneo’s premier gravel cycling event, taking riders deep into the lush landscapes of Sarawak’s interior on a two-day adventure. Starting from the charming colonial waterfront of Kuching, the route ventures into the foothills of the Borneo Highlands, passing through indigenous Bidayuh communities, pepper plantations, and pristine tropical rainforest that is home to some of the world’s most diverse ecosystems.
Day 1 heads south from Kuching along plantation roads and jungle tracks towards the Serian district, climbing steadily into the Bidayuh heartland. Riders pass through traditional longhouse communities where they are welcomed with local refreshments. The overnight camp is at a riverside lodge near Kampung Bengoh, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. Day 2 follows a different route back to Kuching via the Bau gold mining district, with a mix of gravel roads, forest paths, and short tarmac sections.
The terrain demands a bike with at least 38mm tyres, and full-suspension gravel or hardtail MTB setups are popular choices. The tropical climate means rain is always possible, so pack accordingly. The event fee includes the overnight lodge stay, all meals (featuring Sarawakian specialities like laksa, kolo mee, and ayam pansuh), luggage transport, and mechanical support. Post-event, Kuching is one of Malaysia’s most liveable cities, with excellent food, cultural attractions, and easy access to Bako National Park.
