The Sarawak Epic MTB is a two-day stage race that explores the wild terrain of the Santubong Peninsula, just 30 minutes from Kuching. The area is dominated by the imposing 810m Mount Santubong, and the trails that wind through its lower slopes offer some of the most varied and challenging mountain biking in Borneo. The event is based at the Sarawak Cultural Village, a living museum showcasing the traditional architecture and cultures of Sarawak’s diverse ethnic groups.
Day 1 covers 50km on a mix of jungle singletrack, plantation roads, and beach trails. The route climbs through the Santubong Peninsula’s dense rainforest before descending to the coast at Damai Beach. Technical highlights include root-covered climbs, river crossings, and a fast ridgeline traverse with views of the South China Sea. Day 2 covers 40km on a different route that includes more purpose-built trail sections and a punchy climb to a viewpoint overlooking Mount Santubong.
The Sarawak Cultural Village setting adds a unique cultural dimension to the event, with the pre-race briefing held in the village’s longhouse and traditional dance performances at the awards ceremony. Accommodation near the venue at Damai Beach Resort area is recommended. The event is timed as a stage race, with combined times determining overall winners, though many riders participate purely for the experience of riding in one of the world’s most ancient rainforest environments.
