The Sabah Kinabalu Challenge is Borneo’s most demanding road cycling event, taking riders from sea level in Kota Kinabalu towards the towering granite massif of Mount Kinabalu (4,095m), Southeast Asia’s highest peak. The route follows the Kota Kinabalu-Ranau road through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in all of Malaysia, making this a bucket-list event for serious cyclists.
The 140km route climbs from the coast to Kinabalu Park headquarters at 1,563m elevation, a sustained ascent of over 35km through lowland dipterocarp forest, montane cloud forest, and eventually the cool alpine vegetation zone near the park entrance. Along the way, riders pass through the Nabalu Market area with its panoramic mountain viewpoint, and the route offers frequent glimpses of Kinabalu’s dramatic peak above the clouds. The 80km route follows the same road but turns back at the Nabalu midpoint.
The climb is relentless but generally moderate in gradient (3-5% average), with some steeper kicks between km 20 and km 30. Weather can change rapidly in the mountains, and afternoon rain is common, so an early 5:30am start is essential. Carry arm warmers and a light rain jacket for the upper sections where temperatures can drop to 18 degrees Celsius. Support vehicles and aid stations are positioned every 15km along the route. Post-ride, many participants stay to explore Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biodiversity hotspot.
