The Borneo Gravel Safari is Sabah’s flagship gravel event, a two-day expedition that takes riders away from the paved roads and into the heart of the state’s western districts. Starting from the KK Waterfront, the route quickly leaves urban Sabah behind and enters a landscape of rubber plantations, rice paddies, jungle tracks, and indigenous Kadazan-Dusun villages where traditional lifestyles persist.
Day 1 heads south through the Papar and Kimanis districts, following a mix of plantation roads, compacted jungle tracks, and village paths. The terrain is hilly and varied, with several river crossings and jungle sections where the canopy closes overhead. The overnight stop is at a village homestay in the Tambunan district, where riders are hosted by local families and treated to traditional Kadazan cuisine. Day 2 returns to KK via a different route through the lower slopes of the Crocker Range.
The all-inclusive fee covers guided riding, homestay accommodation, all meals, luggage transfer, and mechanical support. A gravel bike with 40mm+ tyres or a hardtail MTB is recommended. The trails include some technical sections with loose rocks and steep gradients that may require walking. Riders should be comfortable with 70km off-road days and carry basic emergency supplies. The event is limited to 60 riders to ensure a quality experience and to minimise impact on the communities visited.
