The Perlis Border Run Cycling Challenge explores Malaysia’s smallest and northernmost state, a compact gem that most cyclists overlook. The route hugs the Malaysian-Thai border, offering unique riding through a landscape of dramatic limestone karst formations, sugar cane fields, and the dark, ancient forests of Perlis State Park. Despite Perlis’s small size, the cycling here is surprisingly varied and rewarding.
The 80km route departs Kangar and heads north to Padang Besar on the Thai border, then follows quiet border roads eastward through Kaki Bukit and its famous limestone caves. The route continues through Perlis State Park, Malaysia’s only semi-deciduous forest, before looping back to Kangar via the western coastal road. The 40km option covers the western portion of the route, including the scenic coastal section along the Straits of Malacca.
Perlis’s flat-to-gently-rolling terrain and quiet roads make this an enjoyable ride for all abilities. The event typically attracts riders from Kedah, Penang, and even southern Thailand, creating a cross-border cycling community feel. Post-ride, explore Kangar’s local food scene, known for Perlis-style laksa and fresh mango (Perlis is Malaysia’s mango capital). The event is accessible via a short drive from Alor Setar or the train to Arau station.
