The Royal Belum MTB Expedition is Malaysia’s most immersive mountain biking experience, a three-day journey through the ancient rainforest of Royal Belum State Park. This 130-million-year-old forest is older than the Amazon and Congo, and is home to all ten species of Malaysian hornbill, the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, and the giant Rafflesia flower. Riding through this pristine wilderness on a mountain bike is a privilege available to a strictly limited 100 riders per edition.
Day 1 begins in Gerik and follows logging roads and indigenous Temiar trails into the park, with a boat crossing of Temenggor Lake to reach the overnight camp. Day 2 is the most challenging, covering 55km on a mix of jungle singletrack and old logging roads with significant climbing through primary rainforest. The camp at a Temiar Orang Asli settlement provides a cultural exchange opportunity. Day 3 returns to civilisation via a different route, ending with a boat ride back across the lake.
The all-inclusive fee covers three days of guided riding with experienced local guides, two nights of jungle camping, all meals, boat transfers, and park permits. A sturdy trail or enduro bike is required, and riders must carry a full repair kit, first aid supplies, and rain gear. This is a true expedition, not a race, with the focus on experiencing one of the world’s most important tropical ecosystems. Riders must have a reasonable level of fitness and off-road experience. Group size is limited to protect the fragile forest environment.
