The Penang Hill Climb Challenge takes on one of northern Malaysia’s most notorious cycling climbs, the winding road from the Penang Botanic Gardens up towards Penang Hill. While the full Penang Hill summit is accessible only by funicular railway, the cycling route follows the old jeep track that climbs 500m on an 8km course with an average gradient of over 6% and maximum pitches reaching 14%.
The narrow, twisting road passes through the lush tropical gardens and into dense forest, with hairpin bends that test bike handling as much as climbing strength. The road surface varies from good tarmac to patchy concrete, adding a technical dimension. The colonial-era route was built for Land Rovers and is barely one car wide in places, which adds character but means the event runs as a one-way timed hill climb with road closures.
Categories include age groups, a single-speed division, and a new gravel bike category for 2026. The event starts at 6am to take advantage of the cool morning air and the shade of the forest canopy. The finish area offers views through the treetops over George Town and the Penang Strait. A shuttle service returns riders to the Botanic Gardens. Post-event breakfast at the nearby Botanic Gardens hawker stalls is a popular tradition, featuring Penang’s famous nasi lemak and teh tarik.
