The Penang Gravel Fest reveals a side of Penang Island that most visitors and even many locals never see. Beyond the famous beaches and heritage zone, Penang’s interior is a hilly jungle wilderness crossed by old cart roads, durian farm tracks, and hiking trails. This event stitches these hidden paths into a gravel cycling route that is both challenging and incredibly scenic.

The 75km route starts in Balik Pulau, the agricultural heart of Penang Island, and climbs into the hills via durian orchard tracks and compacted jungle paths. Highlights include a traverse of the central ridge with views over George Town on one side and the Andaman Sea on the other, a descent through a nutmeg plantation, and a river crossing in the shadow of Penang Hill. The 40km route takes the most scenic sections while avoiding the steepest climbs.

June sits in Penang’s durian season, so riders are treated to the unmistakable aroma (and occasional fruit purchase) along the route. Gravel or mountain bikes with 40mm+ tyres are essential. The terrain includes loose laterite, compacted dirt, some rocky sections, and short steep pitches that may require walking. The post-ride celebration in Balik Pulau features local laksa, cendol, and of course durian from the orchards the route passes through.
