The Penang Century Ride is one of northern Malaysia’s most popular sportive events, combining world-class cycling with the cultural charm of George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. Starting from the iconic Esplanade Field along the waterfront, riders are treated to a route that showcases the best of Penang Island and, for century riders, the lush countryside of Province Wellesley on the mainland.
The 160km route crosses the Penang Bridge (a rare opportunity as it’s normally closed to cyclists), loops through Bukit Mertajam and the mainland’s plantation roads, then returns via the bridge for a final lap of the island. The 100km option completes the full island circuit via Balik Pulau, tackling the rolling hills of the island’s western side. The 50km route stays on the eastern coastal road, offering a flat and fast ride perfect for beginners.
Penang’s famous food scene is reason enough to make a weekend of it. Many riders arrive on Saturday for the pre-event pasta party and cycling expo at Esplanade Field, then celebrate their finish with hawker food at Gurney Drive or New Lane. The event is well-supported with aid stations featuring local kuih and isotonic drinks, mechanical support, and sweep vehicles. George Town’s many boutique hotels and heritage guesthouses fill up quickly around event weekend, so book accommodation early.
