The Penang Bridge International Ride is one of Malaysia’s most iconic cycling events, offering the rare opportunity to ride across the 13.5km Penang Bridge, the country’s first and most famous sea crossing. Normally completely off-limits to cyclists, the bridge is closed to motor traffic for one morning each December, allowing thousands of riders to experience the thrill of cycling over the Penang Strait with the Andaman Sea stretching out on both sides.

The Bridge Crossing category is a straightforward out-and-back ride across the bridge, covering 13.5km each way. The bridge’s gentle gradient and wide lanes make it accessible to all abilities, and the experience of riding at sea level with the ocean just metres below the roadway is genuinely unique. The 42km Island Loop category adds a circuit of Penang Island’s southern coast before the bridge crossing, including the scenic fishing village of Batu Maung and the beachfront at Teluk Kumbar.

This is one of the few cycling events in Malaysia that regularly attracts over 15,000 participants, so expect a festival atmosphere. The start at Queensbay Mall features a cycling expo, music, and food stalls. The event begins at 5am to clear the bridge before normal traffic resumes, so arrive early and be prepared for a pre-dawn start. The sight of thousands of bike lights crossing the bridge in the darkness before sunrise is magical. Book accommodation well in advance, as Penang hotels fill up quickly around this event.
