The Pahang Rainforest Challenge MTB takes riders into the heart of one of the planet’s most ancient ecosystems. The trails around Kuala Lipis skirt the buffer zone of Taman Negara, Malaysia’s premier national park, where the rainforest is estimated to be 130 million years old. This two-day event is as much a nature experience as it is a mountain bike race, with wildlife sightings and breathtaking jungle scenery guaranteed.
Day 1 covers 60km of mixed terrain, starting with a climb through logged secondary forest before entering pristine jungle on tight singletrack trails. The route follows old logging roads, Orang Asli hunting paths, and purpose-built mountain bike trails, with several river crossings that can be knee-deep. Day 2 is slightly shorter at 45km but includes the event’s toughest climbing, with a relentless 8km ascent to a ridge that offers views deep into Taman Negara.
A capable trail or enduro bike is essential, and riders should be prepared for technical terrain including roots, rocks, mud, and water crossings. The event provides a campsite with basic facilities at the overnight stop, and meals are included. A mandatory kit list includes a first aid kit, whistle, waterproof phone case, and 3 litres of water capacity. Kuala Lipis is accessible by train from KL (the scenic east coast line) or by road via the Karak Highway.
