The Bukit Tinggi Hill Climb is a concentrated test of climbing ability on the steep, winding road that leads to the French-themed Colmar Tropicale resort in the hills east of KL. The 12km course gains 600m of elevation, with an average gradient of 5% that disguises several vicious ramps of 10-12%. The road switchbacks through dense rainforest, with each corner revealing another steep pitch that tests both legs and lungs.
The event operates as an individual time trial hill climb, with riders starting at 30-second intervals. Categories include age groups, gender divisions, and a popular folding-bike category that draws serious competition. The fastest riders complete the climb in around 30 minutes, while most recreational cyclists take 40-55 minutes. The narrow, twisting road and steep gradients reward light bikes and pure climbing power over aerodynamics.
The finish at Colmar Tropicale provides a quirky backdrop, with half-timbered French-style buildings and a replica of a European village set against a tropical jungle. Hot drinks and breakfast are served at the summit, where temperatures are several degrees cooler than at the base. Shuttle buses return riders to the start. Bukit Tinggi is just an hour from KL via the Karak Highway, making this an easy event for Klang Valley riders to attend.
