The Miri Oil Town Ride celebrates the cycling culture of Sarawak’s second-largest city, a vibrant oil town near the Brunei border. Miri’s modern infrastructure, wide roads, and scenic coastal setting make it an excellent cycling destination. The event starts from the iconic Miri City Fan, a crescent-shaped public space in the heart of the city.
The 70km route heads south along the Miri-Bintulu coastal highway, offering stunning views of the South China Sea and passing through fishing villages and petroleum industry installations. The turnaround point at the Lambir Hills area provides a chance to glimpse the dense rainforest that borders the highway. The 35km route stays closer to Miri, climbing up Canada Hill (the site of Malaysia’s first oil well in 1910) and looping through the city’s residential areas and parks.
Miri’s proximity to Brunei and the Niah Caves national park makes it a worthwhile multi-day destination. The city has a thriving food scene influenced by Chinese, Malay, and indigenous communities, with the Tamu Muhibbah market being a must-visit for riders looking to refuel post-ride. The event attracts riders from across northern Sarawak and even from Brunei, creating a cross-border cycling community.
