The Malaysia MTB National Championships is the most important cross-country mountain bike race on the domestic calendar. Held at the Bukit Larut MTB Trail Centre near Taiping, this event determines who earns the right to wear the national champion’s jersey for the following year. The venue’s challenging terrain, with its steep jungle climbs, technical root sections, and fast descents, provides a true test of mountain biking skill and fitness.

The 2026 edition features both XCO (Olympic cross-country) and XCC (short track) formats. The XCO course is a 4.5km loop with approximately 450m of climbing per lap, featuring a mix of singletrack through old-growth rainforest, rocky technical sections, and power climbs on exposed ridgelines. Elite riders complete six laps, while age-group categories ride fewer laps depending on their classification. The XCC race on Saturday evening offers short, intense racing on a condensed 1km circuit.

Categories span from Under-15 juniors through to Masters 50+, making this an inclusive event for competitive mountain bikers of all ages. Spectator access is excellent at Bukit Larut, with several vantage points accessible on foot where you can watch riders tackle the most technical sections. Taiping itself is a charming colonial-era town with excellent food, affordable accommodation, and the stunning Lake Gardens just minutes from the race venue.
