The Kota Kinabalu Twilight Criterium is Borneo’s most atmospheric cycling race, held along the KK Waterfront Esplanade as the sun sets over the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The 1.8km circuit uses the wide waterfront promenade and adjacent roads, with the iconic silhouette of Mount Kinabalu providing a dramatic backdrop as riders battle for position under golden twilight skies.

The Open category provides serious racing over 25 laps, attracting the strongest riders from across Sabah and Sarawak. The Community category offers a more relaxed 15-lap race suitable for recreational cyclists wanting to experience the thrill of circuit racing. Both categories benefit from the cooler evening temperatures and the energy of waterfront spectators enjoying the combination of racing and sunset views.

The event starts at 5pm with the Community category, followed by the Open race at 6:30pm as the light fades. The waterfront area is transformed into a cycling festival, with food stalls serving Sabahan specialities like hinava (raw fish salad), tuaran mee, and fresh seafood. The venue is walking distance from most KK city centre hotels and is easily accessible by public transport. Riders visiting from Peninsular Malaysia should consider extending their trip to explore Sabah’s world-class mountain biking and road cycling opportunities.
