The KL Gravel Gathering is the capital’s premier gravel cycling event, starting from the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) in Kepong, a 600-hectare tropical forest right on the edge of KL’s urban sprawl. The contrast between the city’s skyscrapers visible on the horizon and the jungle trails beneath your tyres is what makes this event special. FRIM’s network of research roads and forest tracks provides the backbone of the route.
The 60km route uses FRIM’s internal trails before heading north into the Kanching Forest Reserve and Templer Park area, following a mix of laterite forest roads, plantation tracks, and some paved connectors. The terrain is hilly and varied, with technical off-road sections through dipterocarp forest alternating with fast gravel roads through rubber estates. The 35km route stays within and around FRIM, covering the most accessible trails.
FRIM opens its gates at 6am, allowing riders to start early and avoid the midday heat. The event village in the FRIM carpark features bike wash facilities, local food vendors, and a small cycling marketplace. Gravel or adventure bikes with 35mm+ tyres are suitable, though wider tyres improve comfort on the rougher forest trails. The venue is accessible from anywhere in the Klang Valley within 30-45 minutes, making this one of the most conveniently located gravel events in Malaysia.
