The KL Criterium brings the excitement of circuit racing to the heart of Malaysia’s capital city. Set against the colonial grandeur of Dataran Merdeka and the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, this is one of the most visually spectacular cycling events in the country. The 1.5km circuit features smooth tarmac, tight corners, and one short power climb, making for aggressive, tactically demanding racing.
Three categories cater to different levels: the Elite category attracts Malaysia’s top criterium racers and semi-professional riders in a 30-lap battle, while the Open category offers a 15-lap race for experienced club riders. The Junior category gives under-18 riders a taste of competitive circuit racing in a controlled environment. Prizes include cash, trophies, and sponsored equipment from leading bike brands.
For spectators, the KL Criterium is one of the best events on the calendar. The compact circuit means you can watch the entire race from a single vantage point, and the atmosphere around Dataran Merdeka is electric. Food trucks and cycling brand booths line the spectator area, and there is typically a fun ride for the public in the morning before the racing begins. Getting to the venue is easy via the Masjid Jamek LRT station, just a two-minute walk from the circuit.
