The Kelantan East Coast Explorer is a unique two-day cycling journey through Malaysia’s most culturally distinctive state. Kelantan preserves traditions that have faded elsewhere in the country, from shadow puppet performances (wayang kulit) to top-spinning (gasing) and the vibrant Siti Khadijah Market. This event combines moderate cycling with deep cultural immersion, making it ideal for riders who value experiences as much as kilometres.
Day 1 covers 80km from Kota Bharu southward along the Kelantan River, passing through traditional Malay kampungs where wooden houses on stilts line the riverbanks. The route visits a batik workshop in Pantai Cahaya Bulan, a silversmithing village, and the historic Thai Buddhist temple of Wat Photivihan, home to Southeast Asia’s largest reclining Buddha statue. The overnight stop is in Kuala Krai, a small town at the confluence of two rivers.
Day 2 returns to Kota Bharu via a different route through the interior, passing rubber smallholdings and rice paddies with a backdrop of jungle-covered hills. The terrain is predominantly flat with gentle rollers, making both days accessible to moderately fit riders. Support vehicles carry luggage between overnight stops, and the pace is relaxed with frequent cultural stops. The event fee includes accommodation in Kuala Krai, all meals featuring Kelantanese cuisine (nasi kerabu, ayam percik), and cultural activity entries.
