The Kedah Paddy Fields Century is a uniquely Malaysian cycling experience, taking riders through the vast emerald expanse of the country’s largest rice-growing region. The Kedah Plain stretches as far as the eye can see, with perfectly flat roads cutting through paddies that shimmer green during planting season and golden at harvest time. January timing means riders will experience the lush green of newly planted rice, creating a stunning visual backdrop.
The 160km route forms a grand loop from Alor Setar through the major rice-growing districts of Pendang, Yan, and Kuala Muda, with the imposing silhouette of Gunung Jerai (1,217m) as a constant landmark on the horizon. The terrain is almost completely flat, making this one of the fastest centuries in Malaysia. Strong riders regularly average over 30km/h on this course. The 100km and 50km options cover smaller loops but offer the same immersive paddy field experience.
January in Kedah is typically dry with moderate temperatures, making for ideal riding conditions. The event starts at 5:30am from Dataran Alor Setar, and the route passes through several small towns with local coffee shops that serve as unofficial refreshment stops alongside the official aid stations. Post-ride, do not miss Alor Setar’s famous nasi utara (northern-style rice dishes) and laksa Kedah. The event is accessible via direct flights to Sultan Abdul Halim Airport or the North-South Expressway.
