The Gunung Jerai Hill Climb Challenge tackles one of northern Peninsular Malaysia’s most impressive ascents. Gunung Jerai (Mount Jerai) rises dramatically from the flat Kedah Plain to 1,217m, and the 13km paved road to its summit is one of the steepest continuous climbs in the country. The average gradient is 7%, with multiple sections exceeding 10%, making this a true test for even the strongest climbers.
The road winds through pristine dipterocarp rainforest, passing waterfalls and offering increasingly spectacular views of the Kedah paddy fields stretching to the horizon. On clear days, the summit viewpoint reveals a panorama that stretches from Penang Bridge to the south to the Thai border to the north, with the Andaman Sea glittering to the west. The climb is relentless, with virtually no flat sections to recover.
The event uses a staggered start format, with the fastest seeded riders departing last. The course record is around 35 minutes, but most fit recreational climbers take 50-70 minutes. Categories include age groups, a fixed-gear division, and a folding bike category. The summit area features a rest stop with hot drinks and food, and riders can explore the Gunung Jerai Forest Recreation Park before taking the shuttle bus back to the base. The event is accessible from Penang (1 hour), Alor Setar (30 minutes), or KL (4 hours via highway).
