The Pontian Coastal Ride explores one of Johor’s least-visited corners, the laid-back fishing district at the southwestern tip of Peninsular Malaysia. Pontian’s flat coastal roads, minimal traffic, and authentic kampung atmosphere create a riding experience that feels worlds apart from the bustle of nearby Johor Bahru. On clear days, the Indonesian island of Sumatra is visible across the narrow Straits of Malacca.
The 80km route follows the coast from Pontian Kecil south to Kukup (famous for its water village and seafood), then loops inland through pineapple plantations and oil palm estates before returning along the coast. The 40km option covers the Kukup section, widely regarded as the most scenic part of the route. The terrain is almost completely flat, with only gentle undulations where the road crosses small river estuaries.
Pontian is known for its seafood, and the post-ride celebration features a seafood feast at one of the town’s famous waterfront restaurants. The district is also home to Tanjung Piai, the southernmost point of mainland Asia, which makes an interesting side trip. The event is easily accessible from Johor Bahru (45 minutes by car) and from Singapore via the Second Link crossing. Free parking is available at the start venue.
