The Johor Coast to Coast is one of Malaysia’s toughest single-day cycling challenges, a 180km point-to-point ride across the full width of Johor state. Starting at the Mersing Jetty on the east coast (gateway to Tioman Island), riders cross the hilly interior of Johor before finishing at the historic riverside town of Muar on the west coast. This is a genuine endurance test that demands fitness, pacing, and mental resilience.
The route follows a mix of trunk roads and quiet rural lanes through some of Johor’s most scenic countryside. The first 60km from Mersing are the hilliest, with continuous rolling terrain through palm oil estates and patches of secondary rainforest. The middle section flattens out through the agricultural heartland of Kluang, passing pineapple plantations and cattle ranches. The final 40km to Muar offer flat riding along the Muar River, arriving at one of Malaysia’s most underrated food destinations.
This is a supported event with marshalled aid stations every 25km, motorcycle marshals, and sweep vehicles. However, the 180km distance and Johor’s tropical heat make this unsuitable for inexperienced riders. A strong base of at least 150km training rides is recommended. The event provides shuttle buses to return riders from Muar to Mersing after the event. The finish celebration in Muar features the town’s legendary mee bandung, satay, and otak-otak, making the suffering worthwhile.
