The Genting Highlands Gran Fondo is the ultimate climbing challenge for Malaysian road cyclists. The centrepiece is the legendary 22km ascent from Gohtong Jaya to the summit of Genting Highlands, a climb that gains over 800m of elevation with an average gradient of 3.5% and maximum pitches of 9%. This is the climb that has decided stages of Le Tour de Langkawi and is a rite of passage for every serious cyclist in the region.
The 110km route starts in Gohtong Jaya, descends to the lowlands, and takes a scenic loop through the Pahang countryside before the main event: the full Genting climb. The 55km option starts with a shorter loop before tackling the summit. Both routes finish at the top of Genting, where temperatures are typically 8-10 degrees cooler than at the base. The contrast of climbing from tropical heat into misty, cool mountain air is a unique experience.
Pacing is critical on the Genting climb. The first 10km are deceptively gentle, lulling riders into a false sense of security before the gradient kicks up significantly in the final 12km. Carry warm clothing for the summit, as the combination of altitude, sweat-soaked kit, and mountain breezes can cause rapid cooling. The post-event celebration at Genting includes a hot meal and the chance to explore the resort area. Shuttle buses transport riders and bikes back to the start.
