The Fraser’s Hill Downhill MTB Cup is one of the most anticipated events on Malaysia’s gravity racing calendar. The course follows the historic Gap Road, a narrow, winding colonial-era road that drops 650 vertical metres from Fraser’s Hill (1,524m) through dense montane rainforest. The combination of steep gradients, tight switchbacks, exposed roots, and variable surface conditions (often wet and mossy) makes this one of the most technically demanding downhill courses in Southeast Asia.
The 3.5km course features a mix of natural trail, road sections, and purpose-built DH features including drops, rock gardens, and berms. The upper section is fast and flowing through open highland terrain, while the middle section enters dense jungle with tight, technical switchbacks. The lower section opens up for a high-speed sprint to the finish. Practice runs are available on the Saturday, with racing on Sunday using a seeded start order based on qualifying times.
A proper downhill bike with 180mm+ front and rear travel, full-face helmet, body armour, and knee/elbow pads are mandatory. The highland climate at Fraser’s Hill means cooler temperatures (18-24 degrees Celsius) and frequent mist, creating slippery conditions that add an extra challenge. Uplift shuttles transport riders and bikes to the start between runs. Accommodation at Fraser’s Hill is limited, so book early or stay in Raub (30 minutes away) where more options are available.
