The CAM Borneo Safari MTB Challenge is one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic mountain biking events, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kinabalu and Sabah’s lush tropical rainforest. Now in its 15th year, the event draws riders from across the region who come to test themselves against Borneo’s demanding off-road terrain. The 2026 edition features three distance categories, each offering a unique jungle adventure.
The 120km Ultra category is the marquee event, taking riders deep into the Crocker Range on a mix of singletrack, logging roads, and river crossings. Expect steep climbs through primary rainforest, technical descents on root-covered trails, and water crossings that can be waist-deep after rain. The 80km Challenge follows a similar route but skips the most remote sections, while the 40km Fun Ride stays closer to Kota Kinabalu on well-maintained trails suitable for intermediate riders.
All categories start from Likas Sports Complex in central Kota Kinabalu, with the Ultra riders departing at 5:30am to maximise daylight hours. Feed stations are set up at villages along the route, where local communities provide traditional Sabahan food and refreshments. A full-suspension trail bike with at least 130mm travel is recommended for the Ultra and Challenge categories. Riders should carry rain gear, a basic repair kit, and at least 2 litres of water between stations.
Kota Kinabalu offers excellent accommodation options within minutes of the start venue. Many participants extend their trip to explore Sabah’s other attractions, including Mount Kinabalu, the Kinabatangan River, and the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.
