The Borneo Ultra Cycling Challenge is East Malaysia’s ultimate road cycling endurance event, a 300km three-day stage race through the mountains, valleys, and coastline of Sabah. The route traverses the Crocker Range, drops into the lush Tambunan Valley, and follows the coast back to Kota Kinabalu, covering terrain that ranges from sea level to over 1,700m elevation.
Day 1 (100km) tackles the Crocker Range crossing via the Sinsuron Pass at 1,649m, one of the highest paved road passes in Borneo. The descent into Tambunan Valley is fast and scenic, with views of terraced rice paddies and the Trusmadi range. Day 2 (110km) heads south through the interior to Keningau before turning west through the agricultural heartland. Day 3 (90km) follows the Papar coastal road back to Kota Kinabalu, with the spectacular backdrop of the Crocker Range and South China Sea.
Solo riders must complete all three stages independently, while relay teams split the stages between team members. The solo Ultra category is for experienced endurance cyclists with significant climbing ability, as the cumulative elevation gain over three days exceeds 4,500m. Support vehicles, aid stations, and mechanical support are provided, but solo riders should carry emergency supplies. The finish-line celebration at Sutera Harbour Resort overlooking the sunset is a fitting reward for this epic challenge.
